— You have to be precise here. I don't mean life as an end in itself. A detailed examination of lunch in the dining room or, say, fixing a vacuum cleaner will not interest me if it is not an artistic task. It will not entice the viewer either. One mirroring, recognition is not enough. Here, for example, in the "Beginning" of Panfilov, the heroine treats a guy to dinner at home. What is not a household scene? But in this episode, the director and excellent actors, showing that they are only having lunch, are actually talking about something incomparably deeper and more complex. Subtle details are found, bright characters are built, everything is warmed by a smile — and the episode grows above the vulgarly interpreted everyday life. Panfilov's talent is in the ability to shift from reliable recognition to high drama. Plus an extraordinary sense of humor: without it, life is insipid, and feelings are cloying...

We talked about the "Beginning" for a long time. It was understandable why Danelia spoke with restraint about episodes from the life of Joan of Arc. It seemed superfluous to him to confide the ordinary life of Pasha with the high bonfire of the Maid of Orleans. He is satisfied with the spiritual ups of the heroine in her everyday actions. It is this measure of displacement from everyday life that is in the key of Danelia: when it is not there, naturalism emerges, when it is violated, grandiloquence. Inna Churikova's work seems to concentrate this combination of everyday truth with a readiness for a dramatic impulse. And, probably, in Danelia's sympathies for Panfilov, a significant role was played by their general understanding of the gift of the actress whom Danelia brought to the cinema.

An absurd, funny girl on the stage in "I'm walking through Moscow", a rose from "Thirty—Three", obsessed with a craving for celebrities - Danelia already in these roles revealed an unusually sharp character, comedic expressiveness in Churikova. He discovered something else in her— a touching naivety, a trusting heart. And it seems to me that now he is somewhat annoyed that the roles Churikova played in his tapes did not give the opportunity to fully reveal her talent, which he truly felt. Well, the easier it is to understand his selfless gratitude to the one who so fully conveyed the talent of the actress in all its diversity on the screen.

The topic raised in the conversation worries the director. It is unusual for Danelia to talk in detail about herself. But he willingly "opens up", talking about works close to him in spirit.

— I like the "Extraordinary Exhibition" by Eldar Shengelai. Again, judging by the surface, — Gen. The artist earns his bread. An old father, dogs, relatives, a small town... But again, humor changes the angle of view. This is not an evil irony, but it is not a glorification of the "little man" in any way. And most importantly — again a deep thought growing out of everyday life pictures. If an artist needs art only so that he can take something from him, if the artist does not give himself to art, art takes revenge.

And the cemetery in the finale is the spiritual death of the hero as a master, as a sculptor. But this thought is revealed unintentionally, in everyday events, in everyday actions. We are coming to something that could not be avoided. I want to find another facet in George Danelia's sympathies for the last two films:

— I also really like Otar Ioseliani's film. It seems to me that this is a very "Georgian" picture — is it so? Or do I have a common stereotype: they say, "Georgian" is exactly that?

— It's hard to answer briefly... Better by example: are Antonioni's paintings Italian?

"Probably not... I would say that he is rather a director without nationality.
